Do you want to know a secret I discovered a few years ago? The outcome of your life, goals, and overall success can be predicted! It’s not based on luck, chance, good fortune, wealth, having the right connections, being incredibly smart, or going to an elite private school. Your success in life is based on how well you apply principles! Isn’t that good news?! Now, you don’t have to question whether you can achieve that goal you’ve been stuck on for months. You don’t have to second guess your journey and wonder whether or not you’re on the right path. All you have to do is uncover the underlying principles that are connected to your specific goal(s), apply them, and voilà! You will start getting results seemingly overnight.
A principle is a fundamental truth that governs a specific outcome. For example, if your goal is to lose 8 lbs per month you have to dig in and discovering the underlying truths about weight loss including eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis. If you want to stop struggling financially and move into living a debt-free lifestyle some basic truths (principles) associated with this goal are living on less than you make and intentionally placing your money exactly where you want it to go (budgeting) instead of impulse shopping that leaves you broke and waiting for your next pay cheque. Does that make sense?
Here are a few examples of popular proverbs that have a golden nugget of hidden truth (principles).
Wise Saying: He who walks with wise men will be wise
Principle: If you want to have good judgment and solid character place yourself among wise people who think clearly.
Wise Saying: Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor
Principle: You will either endure the pain of self-discipline and do the hard work now or you will suffer the pain of regret and live a life below your dreams.
Wise Saying: Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life
Principle: Any kind of seeds (lessons you teach them and behaviors you model for them) you plant in your kids are the fruits that will be produced in their life. If you want them to be good with money, self-controlled, and thoughtful, model that behavior for them.
Wise Saying: All hard work brings a profit whereas mere talk accomplishes nothing
Wise Saying: People who cannot control their spending habits end up with nothing
Principle: Without self-discipline, you will lose things that are the most valuable to you ( yourself, the respect of others, your family, time, and so on).
Principles are proven, tried and tested, age-old, irrefutable facts that work for anyone regardless of their experience, race, age, location, income, intelligence, net-worth, skill level, religion, family history, network and so on. You could be born into a rich family and still find yourself struggling to hit your goals because you are ignoring the basic truths that you need to apply to get the outcome that you want or you could be born in the middle of nowhere to parents who aren’t educated and struggle to feed you every month, but if you understand and apply the simple truths (principles) related to your goal you will achieve it every single time. Are you following me?
There are billions of principles operating in the world that help to keep the cycle of success going. How do think people are able to achieve success time and time again and we now have more than 36 millionaires worldwide!? Do you think this happens coincidentally? Do you think they somehow got lucky and found the horseshoe that turned them into millionaires? Lol, not a chance! (see what I did there 😉 haha!).
This is why I tell you all the time if someone has achieved a specific goal that you also want to achieve you don’t need to compare your intelligence, skills, or ability to theirs. You should instead view them as a source of inspiration! They are a reflection of what’s possible for you. They are a guide to your “pot of gold” at the end of the rainbow. They have learned insights and gems (principles) that can help you get the same results if you humble yourself and allow them to teach you. They have become tangible confirmation for you to know that your goals are totally attainable.
To learn from them you can read their books, study their life, watch interviews, and so on. If you know them personally you can spend time with them, ask questions, listen to their story and keep your ears open for reoccurring themes (principles) like being like being diligent, focusing on one thing at a time, perseverance, and so on.
If you want to succeed in business, relationships, money management, parenting, weight loss, whatever it is all you need is to find someone who has attained the level of success that you want and implement the SAME principles that they used. You can get the same results as them by using the same principles because principles never change. If it worked for them, it will work for you and guess what? The opposite is true as well. If it didn’t work for them then it won’t work for you!
If someone is failing miserably in marriage, has bad relationships with their kids, and is always struggling to keep money to the end of the month are you going to ask them for relationship or money management advice, follow their strategy, or adhere to the principles they use? Lol, *shake my head* not even close! You’re going to strive to do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what they’re doing because you can clearly see that what they are doing, the formula they are using is not working and you want something that works, right!?
Let me guess, this sounds way too easy right? I’m telling you the key to achieving the goal you’ve been struggling to achieve for years is knowing the principles and you’re thinking there has to be more to it than just that. Well if you thought that, you’re right. The concept is simple, but getting it done is where the challenge kicks in.
You have to not only put in the work to identify the right principles related to your goal, but you also have to apply it. I mean, what is knowledge without application? That’s like an apple tree without apples at harvest time. A huge waste of space and effort.
Principles only work when applied consistently. You can’t try it for a month and then say “it doesn’t work, I tried it.” You have to give the seeds that you plant some time to take root. First, you have to work through the junk that you have built up for years that has kept you stuck unable to hit your goals. Then you can plant the new seeds (principles) that will lead you to long-term success and help you to develop your character. After you build some consistency you will start seeing results and before you know it you’ll be onto life goal number 2 feeling confident and proud of the person you’ve become.
Stop holding yourself back with all of the doubt, fear, and limited thinking. You are capable of achieving anything that you envision. You have the power to achieve your goals starting right where you are. Commit to the process, overcome your fears and make 2019 your year of having and experiencing God’s best for you! Until next time, xo!
