We often talk about making every year better than the last, wanting to grow to new heights and take things to the next level, but what is actually required in order for this to happen?
We know that it takes more than just shooting up a drive-by prayer or reading one really great book, but we tend to rely on external effort to accomplish the enduring transformation we seek. BUT (and this is a big but) what if I told you that true transformation always starts within?
Living From The Outside In
Living in a physical 3D world can trick us into believing that all the answers we seek are just outside our reach, but what if you knew exactly what to do it was just a matter or applying the information? What if every time you felt stuck you just needed to get present and start using the resources you have right in front of you? How much do you think your life would improve?
All Change Begins Within
This is why in my signature program 90-Days: One Goal, I teach all of my clients and students how to find the answer to their questions and grow pass the idea of being stuck by coaching themselves and learning how to ask outcome oriented (solution-based) questions.
There’s a famous quote by Tony Robbins that says, “The quality of our life is determined by the quality of our questions”. So if we want our lives to improve, it’s a good idea to look at the type of questions we ask ourselves (and others) and to take a serious look at the person we are being.
Who Are You Being?
Are you the kind of person who is always looking for new things to learn or new experiences to try? If not, you’re probably not going to achieve your goals this year because goal achievement requires change.
The whole purpose of a goal is to create a new standard for yourself. It’s like giving yourself a new normal once every 3 months (more about quarterly goal-setting here). It’s an invitation to reinvent yourself, mature, grow, learn, explore, and develop your creative skills!
The size of your goal reveals how willing you are to change. If you set small “realistic” type goals that feel safe and easy to achieve, then what you are telling yourself is that you’re only willing to grow a little bit this year. Is that really the kind of person you want to be?
Be Intentional & Get Proactive About Your Growth
Here’s the thing and we all know this to be true. Change does not happen by accident. It takes intentionality, focus, diligence, and commitment. It’s not an overnight process or something that we do because it feels good.
It actually might suck in the beginning because it’s something new that requires daily commitment and attention, but the results you create and the person you become in the process is your reward.
I remember being so hungry for growth but unwilling to change. I wanted to have more money saved in my bank account and less overdraft fees but I didn’t want to manage my money in ways that would consistently produce that result.
I told myself things like “I need to make more money in order to save more” but after months of having the same goal and no progress, I knew I had to do something different.
Turn Your Knowledge Into Application
Instead of only listening to Dave Ramsey and financial experts who were debt-free millionaires, I decided to follow their advice. I cut up my credit card, started only using cash or my VISA-debit and overtime (not overnight) money became less and less of a struggle to manage.
I wasn’t wondering where my pay cheque went at the end of the week. I wasn’t taking out loans or asking family/friends to help me cover my expenses. I was 100% living within my means and it felt liberating! I was no longer a slave to my emotions or unprofitable spending habits.
Now it’s been almost 7 years of studying and learning the principles of money and choosing to discipline my behavior to create effective money habits and now although I haven’t achieved my goal of debt-freedom yet (I will be crossing that line this summer, stay tuned!!)
I’ve learned that even though no discipline seems pleasant at the time and it’s sometimes straight up painful! Afterward, there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.
