Self Discipline: Go Big Or Go Home

“With self-discipline
most anything is possible”

– Theodore Roosevelt

This month’s challenge has me pumped! Ha-ha! This is going to be so good! Lol, I’m smiling from the inside out right now. Self-discipline is usually one of the HARDEST characteristics to establish. It takes deliberate focus, constant effort, and obviously discipline. I like to think of self-discipline as a self-imposed structure or routine, that we create for ourselves, with the purpose of reaching a clear target. Although sometimes perceived as a curse, self-discipline is the greatest gift you could give yourself.

This month instead of dreaming, hoping, and wishing we had the discipline to get things done, LET’S DO IT! I know you guys are ready! We’ve talked about getting rid of complaining, how to practically focus and start developing your potential, as well as, how to stop making excuses. So, we have no problem. We’re ready, right?! Lol, if only it were that easy.

“By constant self-discipline & self-control
you can develop greatness of character.”
– Grenville Kleiser

Talking about something is not the same as practicing it. Self-discipline converts our vision into reality. Nothing great ever comes without sacrifice. We know this! We know we’ll never get results without exerting mental and physical effort. When we strive to reach a goal, we’re committing to stretching ourselves. We’re committing to our personal growth.

Self-discipline is telling yourself “right now I have to finish step A, so that in 1 year from now, 6 months from now, or even by next week I can start step B” (depending on the type of goal you’ve set). In setting this standard for yourself you’re also committing to better time management and a life of less distractions.

In establishing self-discipline it’s best to create a daily routine. A routine is like an automatic system. If you create a system that takes you one step closer to your goal every day, then you know without a doubt that in a few weeks, months, or a year, you will hit your target and possibly surpass it. If you pursue healthy routines, you’ll enjoy the fruits of that lifestyle. The same principle applies if you pursue a less productive routine. Right now, you might think “I’m not pursuing either”, but here’s the truth. Neutral is not a position in this game. The fact is, you’ve already created a daily routine whether you’re aware or not. Unawareness of your routine confirms that

  • You aren’t living at your highest potential
  • You have a gold mine to discover within yourself (gifts, talents, skills, etc.)
    1. So, here’s what we’re going to do! This month I challenge you to take baby steps to start strengthening your self-discipline muscles. How you choose to do this is completely up to you. I suggest cultivating a baby step that aligns with a goal you have for April or the end of 2018.

Here’s an example, let’s say your goal is to be healthier. You could start with something as small as drinking water every morning before you eat your first meal. If your goal is to get a better understanding of your craft, your focus for next month can include 15 mins, 30 mins, or 1 hour of doing research, gaining hands on experience through volunteering, or simple developing on your skills/craft.

My personal goal for next month is to start my online business (Whoop wooou! Ya’ll better pray for me! lol). My baby step is to work every day for an hour to climb the ladder until I hit completion.

Now, if you don’t know this, I’m a wife with 2 babies under 2 (time consuming). I’m a singer so I attend 2-3-hour rehearsals a few times a week (time consuming). I’m also a part of a few other things that include a lot of meetings and projects that demand my time. All of that to say, with all these demands on my time and attention I could have a thousand reasons why I won’t get it done by next month, but the truth is, if I discipline myself, manage my time better, and really minimize distractions, then on Sunday, April 1, 2018 we will celebrate the launch of my online business!

I share this to motivate and inspire you to push yourself and really commit to your baby step(s). Being consistent with this will produce momentum that will spill over into other areas of your life. You might be a little wobbly in the beginning, but that’s okay. It’s to be expected. We’re aiming for long-term growth

If you fall off the wagon one day, get back on it the next! We won’t slow down or stop because we have a bad experience or make mistakes. If you commit to your baby step(s) every day, in two-weeks minimum, you’ll start to see that you think differently, and you feel a stronger sense of self-confidence.

I believe that we can do it. Let’s stop becoming, and start being.
